Whenever the "official" religion of the king changed from Buddhist to Hindu, the Hindu followers did a fabulous job of destroying 10,000's of Buddha statues. But when the religion changed from Hindu to Buddhism, the Buddhist followers simply worshiped the Hindu gods as if they were Buddhist statues, without destroying anything.
Today vandals steal the heads to sell on the black market.
